A Relaxed Repast for Mom

Where do you eat dinner on Mother's Day? You want to give Mom a break, but most restaurants are jammed with like-minded husbands and kids.

The Fall Creek (Oregon) Seventh-day Adventist Church decided to beat the crowds and shatter the stereotypes at the same time. They held a Mother's Day potluck at the church—with the men in charge.

"The men had to think up the dish and cook it themselves at home," says Chad McComas, who was pastor at the time. "The wives were to leave it all up to the husbands."

At church, the men gathered in the kitchen to set the serving table, prepare the beverages, and warm up the green beans. Afterward they washed the dishes. The women sat back and enjoyed the whole thing.

"For weeks afterward people were talking about the potluck," says McComas. "The women were eager, of course, to continue the tradition next Mother's Day."
