Year-Round Cheer
Christmas may not be the best time to send greeting cards after all. Pastor Ralph Klassen avoids the rush and sends a personal letter to each of the couples in his church on their wedding anniversary. At Lakeview Mennonite Brethren Church in Lethbridge, Alberta, that amounts to 45 or 50 letters a year, "and dozens of those are in June and July," says Klassen.
"I do it for several reasons. It lets people know I care. I remember them specifically. And it emphasizes the value of good marriages and Christian homes."
Klassen usually includes a Scripture verse appropriate for each family and tells the couple why he appreciates them.
Response, he says, has been great.
"Thanks for your personal contact," said one couple.
"We don't have any children living nearby anymore," said another couple. "It's nice to have someone here remember this special occasion. Are you and your wife free to come over for dinner to celebrate?"
