A Professional Next Door
When two different couples in Bethel Baptist Church, Joliet, Illinois, were advised by local counselors to proceed with divorce. Pastor Conrad Lundberg knew something had to change. The nearest Christian psychologist, however, was almost an hour away.
"We had several cases that went beyond my seminary counseling training," says Lundberg, "and I wanted very badly to provide them with the help they needed." The solution came when an associate pastor in the area decided to move into full-time counseling while he took additional studies.
"He needed office space and clients, so we worked out an arrangement for him to work in our building every Friday. We provide an office, a car allowance, and some secretarial help. It's his practice, but in our facilities. He goes to two other towns on other days of the week."
About half the Joliet clients have turned out to be from Bethel, and another couple receiving help recently joined the church. "It's been good for us without incurring a lot of expense," the pastor says, "and it's been a boost for him."
