A Glimpse of Things to Come
If a church doesn't have a Sunday night tradition (and even if it does), getting people to attend Sunday evening events can be a challenge. When the United Methodist Church in Coralville, Iowa, decided to have a six-week film series, a lay person's creative suggestion helped make it a success. "Promoting films through printed or verbal announcements didn't adequately capture the power of the evening film," says George White, who was pastor at the time. "Someone suggested showing a clip of the film during the morning service." Each week a particularly interesting one or two-minute segment of that night's film was previewed during morning worship. The result? Sunday evening attendance for the series averaged 150, compared with a normal 30-50. "The Sunday morning film clip doesn't get all the credit," says White. "The high quality of the films, community-wide publicity, and personal invitations also were factors. But the previews did contribute to the strong response."
