Teacher Tryouts (Junior High Division)
The gift of teaching may show itself as early as junior high. At least that's what Joan Martin discovered while teaching that age level at Kenmore Baptist Church outside Buffalo, New York. On the last Sunday of each month, her class of girls joined the boys' class for a special program plus refreshments. "As part of this series, we decided to give our classes the chance to become teachers for a day," Martin reports, "We arranged for them to go downstairs to the junior department and show their skills. It would be a unique way to see who had leadership ability and might be interested in teaching someday." Preparation took several sessions. Boys and girls were mixed in interest groups: • The tape recorder group acted out the parable to be taught, using words from the Bible whenever possible and a piano note to indicate change of time. • The artist section drew color renderings of the story. • The bulletin board/chalkboard group planned captions to add to the pictures and also came up with discussion questions. "As we encouraged our kids to work together," says Martin, "we found the shy students becoming involved. We saw to it that no one was left out." The big day was a success. Junior highs were nervous as they waited in the downstairs hall to begin. The juniors, however, turned out to be a very attentive audience—almost stunned to be learning from junior highs, but willing to answer questions and participate. "We praised all of our students as they completed their parts in the program," Martin says, "and it was clear that some of them had discovered something to pursue. 'Let's do it again next year' was the common response."
