Pepperoni Evangelism
There are hard ways and easy ways to do teen evangelism. One of the easiest, according to the youth group at University Baptist Church, Boca Raton, Florida, is to offer free pizza and activities after home football games. "We took an ad in the football program inviting teenagers to our church after the game," says Bill Wroge, youth pastor, "and 103 showed up! They were looking for somewhere to go anyway, and our option was not only cheaper but better than the usual fighting and drinking that goes on in the neighborhood pizza parlors." Following the food, Wroge gave a 20-minute presentation on what Christianity is, with the result that seven students made personal decisions to follow Christ. The evening then proceeded with volleyball, films, and Ping-Pong. When the church heard about this initial success, it quickly underwrote the cost of pizza for the remaining six home games. The advertisement in the program continued to be effective; attendance for the season averaged 87. "We changed the order a bit each week," says Wroge, who is now training for missionary service overseas. "But it was exciting to keep seeing kids who would never have shown up on Sunday morning. "We reached out to them where they were, offered them something they wanted—and they were willing to listen to us talk about the gospel along the way. It worked better than we ever dreamed."
