Announcing rules to a youth group ready to hit the road for a camp or retreat is usually like trying to preach in a video arcade. Even if you carried tablets of stone, you couldn't overcome the visions of fun and frolic that dance in their heads. When Kim Jackson, director of Christian education at Roseville (Ill.) Christian Church, set out recently with 19 teens for a convention in the state capital, she succeeded where many have failed. Besides talking, she put the rules on paper—heavily laced with humor and stick-figure cartoons. Excerpts: 1. There will be absolutely NO laughing your head off! (cartoon) 2. We'll eat supper when we arrive in Springfield, and then check into our rooms at the Hilton (woo! big time!). Kim should have your $10 for this. If you want to give her $100, that's OK, too. 3. If you want to go to heaven (or live to see Monday), everyone will attend all scheduled activities! Thank you! (happy face) 4. You will have some "free time" (between 3.9 seconds and 5 hours). Enjoy this time doing things your mother would approve of. (What do you mean, that leaves nothing to do?!) 5. If you are not in your rooms by 11:30 p.m.) giant Egyptian cockroaches will carry you to a nearby historical (not hysterical) statue, where you will spend the rest of your life brushing dust off Lincoln's nose. (See you in your rooms at 11:30 p.m.) 6. By 12:59 a.m. you will feel yourself drifting into a deep sleep, and by 1 a.m. you will be in Sleepytown, U.SA. (south of Peoria on I-55). If not, a hypnotist will be sent to your room with a 2-by-4 and you will be knocked out for sure. Zzzzzzz. 7. We must check out of the hotel before breakfast (7:30-8:30 a.m.) .
