"High Impact, Low-Cost Graphics"
Like many a growing church, the Lansing (Illinois) Assembly of God had to move its morning service to a school gymnasium temporarily. One of the ways Pastor Robert L. Neuman drew worshipers' attention away from the basketball hoops and onto spiritual things was by using an overhead projector. Now, even though the congregation is back in a sanctuary, the practice continues. "As people enter, I often have the day's sermon Scripture waiting for them on the screen. They can sit down and immediately turn their minds toward the Word." If the sermon text is not succinct (maximum for a transparency is about 50 words), Neuman may choose a correlating passage from another part of the Bible or a pertinent quotation from his study. The Scripture is usually written inside the drawing of an open Bible or a scroll, both of which are available from Faith Venture Visuals, P. O. Box 685, Lititz, PA 17543. "I don't use the overhead every Sunday," the pastor says, "—just often enough to keep it fresh and noticed by the people. Some even mentioned to me that they use the preservice time to memorize the Scriptures that appear on the screen." Bold red-letter banners, a foot high and 15 feet long, get everyone's attention from time to time at Whispering Lakes Community Church in Ontario, California. Assorted uses: At Easter: "He is Risen—Hallelujah!" At Christmas: "Joy … Peace … Light" For giving outdoor directions: "Picnic This Way" or "Youth Car Wash $2" ... "We've gotten good service," reports Pastor Jon H. Alien, "and the banners have been used to great advantage. They can be read instantly from anywhere in the auditorium; they really make people take notice of our special emphasis for the day."
