A Board to Please the Board
If you've thought about outfitting classrooms with the new "Whiteboards" that utilize dry-erase markers instead of dusty chalk, but have been put off by the price—there's a cheaper way. "Dry-erase boards list for anywhere from $100 to $275," says Angus McDonald, pastor of the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk, Iowa. "We discovered that Marlite bathroom paneling at the lumber yard is the same thing—and it runs $13 a sheet! A four-by-eight panel can be cut in half to make two $6.50 boards in two different rooms." Teachers hail the markers both for their range of colors and for the legibility gained by writing on a white instead of a dark surface. The ink dries almost instantly to a fine dust that clings to the Marlite but does not penetrate it. An eraser or cloth wipes the board clean. McDonald adds two warnings, however: "Don't place the boards in direct sunlight—that makes any markings permanent. Also, don't use other types of markers such as felt-tip pens unless they're water-soluble. "All our teachers who have used the boards are enthusiastic about them and would hate to go back to chalk. The only person who's happier still is the church treasurer."
