Cheap Space Fast
David Wong and the Chinese Alliance Church of Wheaton, Illinois, recently acquired a worship facility for a miserly $13.50 per square foot. And they were able to occupy within a matter of weeks. How? They found a school district ready to sell a three-unit mobile classroom cluster. "We had bought a piece of property, but when our building committee started to meet with contractors, we realized we just couldn't afford to build," says Wong. "Then another pastor mentioned the idea of converting portable classrooms. "We actually bought the units for just $500 apiece, complete with air conditioning, electric heat, overhead lighting, and washrooms. By the time we finished moving and remodeling the units and paying the architect, we had spent an affordable $35,000. And we can accommodate over 200 worshipers." Other school systems have been known to give away mobile units no longer needed. "Now we're really bringing prayers back into the classroom," Wong adds with a grin.
