In Brief

  1. Televangelist Robert Tilton, 52, has sold his Word of Faith church to the city of Farmers Branch, Texas, for $6.1 million. The suburban Dallas community plans to convert the 13-acre property into a convention center. Tilton also has settled a million-dollar fraud lawsuit filed by his first wife, Marte, in 1996. Tilton, who now lives in Florida, is still on Black Entertainment Television weekday mornings.
  2. Probate Judge Bobby Day of Decatur, Georgia, rejected a proposal by petitioners in unincorporated Brooksville who wanted the town to be governed by the Ten Commandments (CT, April 5, 1999, p. 14). Day ruled that state law detailing requirements for an incorporation vote had not been followed.
  3. Dallas-based Operation Rescue National has changed its name and expanded its focus, following a sparsely attended anti-abortion campaign in Buffalo in April. In addition to fighting abortion, Operation Save America will oppose such sins as homosexual activities and child pornography. "We'll be taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to every gate of hell," director Flip Benham told CT.
  4. W. Frank Harrington, pastor of the largest Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation in the country, died March 3 after battling a respiratory infection for nearly two months. Harrington, 63, had been pastor of the 11,000-member Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta for 27 years.
  5. James E. Bultman becomes the new president of Holland, Michigan–based Hope College July 1. Bultman is currently president of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.
