When I joined Christianity Today, Inc., four and a half years ago, many ideas were presented to me for ways to enhance the effectiveness of Christianity Today and for other publications we should eventually start. "Make CT monthly instead of fortnightly." "Start a weekly Christian news magazine." "A newsletter to alternate with CT." Over the years many additional ideas kept surfacing through research and interaction, and we have discussed them at length. However, we kept two factors uppermost in our minds. First, our main concern was to make Christianity Today, the flagship publication, fully effective in the three basic areas: editorial, circulation, advertising. Anything which would drain off energies from the prime task was unthinkable. Second, we have no desire to simply expand for expansion's sake. We're non-profit, and our motivation is to serve the leadership of the church. Yet, we realized that new ventures might spread the overall administrative cost and introduce efficiencies which would help keep Christianity Today virile. We kept asking ourselves, "If we can meet a unique and pressing need and really minister through a new publication, do we want to consider starting one? However, if a field is already being fully served, why bother?" It's a big harvest field, and there are a lot of needs not being met. This last year both of these prime considerations began coming together. All three areas of Chrishanity Today are in strong, capable hands and steadily progressing. Ken Kantzer has grabbed hold of editorial, hired an excellent managing editor in Jim Reapsome, and has built a top-notch staff.
